Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in India: 2026 How-To Guide
Short answer: To do Answer Engine Optimization in India, make sure Google, Bing, ChatGPT and Perplexity can crawl your site, rewrite key pages to answer customers’ real questions directly, cover the Hindi and regional-language queries your buyers use, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and track AI citations monthly in Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a fixed list of test questions.
This is a practical guide for marketing heads, founders and agency teams at Indian businesses: D2C brands, B2B and SaaS companies, clinics, colleges, real estate firms and local service businesses. It assumes you already know what AEO is. If you don’t, start with our explainer, What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Here you get the India-specific context that changes how you prioritise, a 90-day implementation plan, guidance on language, voice, local search and WhatsApp, the mistakes we see most often, and a measurement setup you can run without expensive software.
What is different about AEO in India?
Three things set India apart: answer engines here already work in many Indian languages, Indian users rely on voice and camera search more than users anywhere else, and buyers often move from a search answer straight into a call or a WhatsApp chat. Your AEO plan should reflect all three.
- AI answers in Indian languages. Google’s AI Mode launched in India in English, then Hindi in September 2025, and in October 2025 Google added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. AI Overviews were already available in English and Hindi by October 2024.
- Voice and visual search at scale. Google says people in India form its largest user base for both voice and visual search globally, and that India was the first country outside the US to get Search Live, which lets you talk to Search and point your camera, in English and Hindi (Google India, October 2025). Google has also said Indian users listen to AI Overviews responses more often than users in other countries (Google for India 2024).
- A large, multilingual audience. The IAMAI and Kantar Internet in India Report 2024 counted 886 million active internet users, and found that 98% accessed content in Indic languages (PTI report via The Week, January 2025).
The practical takeaway: an English-only, text-only content plan will miss a large share of the questions your customers are asking answer engines in India.
Which answer engines should an Indian business prioritise?
Start with Google, because AI Overviews, AI Mode and the local results on Search and Maps reach the largest audience. Then cover ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, which matter most for B2B, technology and research-heavy purchases. The table shows what feeds each one and the first action to take.
| Answer engine | What it draws on | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google’s Search index; pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible (Google) | Fix indexing in Search Console; rewrite priority pages answer-first |
| Google local results and Maps | Google Business Profile, reviews, links and your website | Verify and complete your Business Profile; reply to reviews |
| ChatGPT search | Pages surfaced by OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot and its search providers (OpenAI) | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt; confirm Bing indexing |
| Perplexity | Real-time web search; its PerplexityBot crawler surfaces and links sites (Perplexity) | Allow PerplexityBot; publish clearly sourced pages |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Bing’s index and Bing Places | Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools; set up IndexNow; claim Bing Places |
| Not a web search engine; it is where many buyers continue the conversation | Make sure the answers you give on WhatsApp match your website |
How do you implement AEO in 90 days?
Spend the first two weeks measuring where you stand, the next month fixing access and rewriting your highest-value pages, and the final six weeks on local signals, authority and measurement. This order gets the quickest wins from pages you already have.
Days 1–15: audit
- Write a test-question list. Pick 30 to 50 questions buyers ask before choosing you. Include English, Hindi (in Devanagari) and Roman-script Hindi versions where your customers use them, plus local variants such as “in Pune” or “near Noida”.
- Record today’s answers. Run each question in Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode), ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Log who is cited, whether you appear, and whether anything said about your business is wrong.
- Check crawler access. Review robots.txt and your CDN or firewall rules for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Security settings sometimes block bots you actually want.
- Check indexing. In Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, confirm your service, product and location pages are indexed. Note pages blocked by noindex or nosnippet.
- Pull your real queries. Export Search Console queries and look for question phrasing and Hindi or Hinglish wording. These become your headings.
Days 16–45: fix and rewrite
- Fix access and indexing issues found in the audit, starting with revenue pages.
- Rewrite your top 10 to 20 pages answer-first. Phrase headings as the customer’s question and answer it in the first one or two sentences. Include specifics Indian buyers look for: prices or price ranges in rupees, delivery areas, timelines, eligibility, documents needed and payment options.
- Add first-hand detail. Google’s guide to generative AI search says unique, experience-based content is the approach most likely to build long-term visibility, and that generic summaries of existing content add little (Google Search Central).
- Move key facts into HTML text. Microsoft warns that AI systems may skip answers hidden in tabs, PDFs or images (Microsoft Advertising). Many Indian sites keep fee structures, brochures and price lists as PDFs or images; publish the key details as page text too.
- Add authorship and sources. Use named authors with real credentials, and link statistics to their primary source.
Days 46–90: local, authority and measurement
- Complete local profiles on Google Business Profile and Bing Places, and make your name, address, phone number and hours consistent everywhere they appear.
- Build genuine mentions through reviews, press coverage, industry associations and partner pages.
- Add language versions for the pages where your audience searches in Hindi or a regional language (see the next section).
- Set up reporting in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and re-run your question list at the end of the 90 days to compare with your baseline.

How should you handle Hindi, Hinglish and regional-language queries?
Create proper language versions of your most important pages for the languages your customers actually search in, each on its own URL, and link them with hreflang. Don’t rely on machine translation of menus alone, and don’t mass-produce thin translated pages.
Google’s guidance on multilingual sites is specific (Google Search Central):
- Use a separate URL for each language version, not cookies or browser settings.
- Add hreflang annotations so Google shows the right language version.
- Keep one language per page for both content and navigation; avoid side-by-side translations.
- Translating only the boilerplate, such as menus and footers, while the main content stays in English creates a poor experience.
- Don’t automatically redirect users by IP; let them switch languages with links.
Roman-script Hindi (Hinglish) is different, because it is not a separate language version. You usually don’t need Hinglish pages. Instead, check your Search Console queries for Hinglish phrasing and make sure your English or Hindi pages answer those questions clearly. Google’s guide notes that its AI systems understand synonyms and intent, so you don’t need to chase every wording variation.
Prioritise by demand. A Lucknow clinic or a Chennai coaching institute may need Hindi or Tamil versions of its core pages; a B2B SaaS company selling to IT teams may not. Start with the five to ten pages that drive enquiries, have a fluent speaker review every translation, and expand only if the data supports it.
How do you optimise for voice and camera search in India?
Write answers that sound natural when read aloud, state the key fact in the first sentence, and make your products and premises easy to recognise visually. Voice and camera queries tend to be longer and more conversational, and Google says AI Mode questions are nearly three times longer than traditional searches.
- Read your answers aloud. If a sentence is hard to say, it will be hard to listen to. Indian users listen to AI Overviews more often than users elsewhere, so this matters.
- Answer the spoken version of the question. People say “how much does a root canal cost in Delhi” rather than typing “root canal cost Delhi”. Use headings that match the spoken form.
- Use clear units and local terms. Write prices in rupees, use lakh and crore where your audience does, and name localities, landmarks and pin codes your customers recognise.
- Help visual search. India has more monthly Google Lens users than any other country (Google India Year in Search 2025). Use original product and storefront photos, descriptive file names and alt text, and put product names and model numbers in page text, not only in images.
How does local AEO work for Indian businesses?
Local AEO means making sure answer engines can find accurate, current details about your business and have reasons to recommend it. For Google, that starts with your Business Profile, which Google says helps your products and services appear in both AI responses and other Search results.
Google ranks local results on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known you are, including links and the number and quality of reviews). Google also says you cannot pay for a better local ranking (Google Business Profile Help).
- Verify your Business Profile and choose the most specific primary category.
- Fill in every field: hours, service areas, attributes, products or services and booking links.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review, positive or negative. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers this in detail.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical across your website, Google, Bing Places and the directories you use.
- Create a page on your website for each real location or service area, with unique, useful local detail. Don’t create hundreds of near-identical city pages; Google treats mass-produced pages made to manipulate results as scaled content abuse.
- Claim Bing Places. Bing recommends keeping address, hours and contact details current so they can appear in AI-generated responses (Bing Webmaster Blog).
Where does WhatsApp fit into AEO?
WhatsApp is not an answer engine you can optimise for, but it is often where an Indian buyer goes next after reading an AI answer. Treat it as the follow-up channel: make it easy to reach from the pages that get cited, and make sure the answers your team or bot gives match what your website says.
Third-party general-purpose AI assistants are no longer part of the picture there. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform terms bar AI providers from offering a general-purpose assistant as the main function of a WhatsApp service (Meta terms), and ChatGPT and Copilot left WhatsApp on 15 January 2026 as a result. The rule targets cases where the AI itself is the product; businesses can still use automation for their own customer support (The Decoder).
In practice:
- Add a click-to-chat link on your highest-intent pages, such as pricing, services and location pages.
- Use the same question-and-answer content in your WhatsApp quick replies or bot as on your website, so a buyer hears one consistent answer.
- Log questions that come in on WhatsApp. They are an excellent source of new headings and FAQ entries for your site.
If you want to run those conversations at scale, our product Sandesh handles WhatsApp customer conversations.
What should AEO look like in different industries?
The steps are the same everywhere, but the questions and trust signals differ by sector. Use this table to decide what to emphasise first.
| Sector | Questions buyers ask answer engines | Focus first |
|---|---|---|
| D2C and ecommerce | “Best X under ₹2,000”, “X vs Y”, “is X worth it” | Product pages with full specs in text, honest comparisons, reviews, Google Merchant Center feeds |
| Healthcare | Costs, procedures, recovery time, “best doctor for X near me” | Doctor bylines with qualifications, medically reviewed content, Business Profile for each clinic. Health topics get extra scrutiny under Google’s guidance. |
| Education | Fees, eligibility, placements, admission dates, comparisons with other institutes | Fee and eligibility details as page text (not only PDFs), updated every admission cycle, Hindi or regional versions where students search that way |
| Real estate | Prices per sq ft, possession dates, RERA details, locality comparisons | Project pages with verifiable details, locality guides with first-hand information, consistent listings |
| B2B, SaaS and manufacturing | “Best X software for Indian companies”, pricing, integrations, compliance | Clear pricing or pricing logic, comparison pages, case studies, presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot answers |
What AEO mistakes do Indian businesses make most often?
The most common mistakes are following out-of-date advice, hiding key facts in formats AI systems can’t read, and producing large volumes of thin pages. Each one wastes effort or creates risk.
- Adding FAQ schema to get rich results. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from 7 May 2026 (Google Search Central updates). Keep visible FAQ sections for readers, but don’t expect the markup to produce a rich result.
- Believing AEO needs special files or markup. Google says you don’t need llms.txt files or special schema to appear in its AI features, and that structured data isn’t required for them.
- Mass-producing city or keyword pages. Hundreds of near-identical “service in [city]” pages risk breaking Google’s scaled content abuse policy, and they rarely get cited.
- Publishing machine translations without review. Poor translations erode trust with readers and give answer engines nothing worth quoting.
- Keeping prices and fees in PDFs or images. Put the key facts in HTML text.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Check bot-protection settings so you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Bingbot without meaning to.
- Buying “guaranteed AI ranking” packages. Google states that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Nobody can guarantee a citation.
- Never checking the answers. Many businesses never look at what AI tools say about them, including wrong prices, old addresses or a competitor’s name. Check monthly.
How do you measure AEO results in India?
Use the free platform reports first, add a monthly test-question check in each language you serve, and connect it to enquiries. You don’t need an enterprise tool to start.
| Metric | Tool | India-specific tip |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover | Search Console’s Search Generative AI performance report, available to all sites since 31 August 2026 (Google) | Filter by country to separate Indian visibility from international |
| Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Review grounding queries for Indian place names and Hindi terms |
| Citation rate and accuracy | Your fixed test-question list, run monthly in each engine | Run English, Hindi and regional versions separately and compare |
| Local visibility | Google Business Profile performance | Track calls, direction requests and website clicks per location |
| AI referrals | Analytics referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com | Compare enquiry quality with organic search visitors |
| Enquiries influenced by AI | Lead forms and WhatsApp chats | Add “How did you find us?” with an AI assistant option, and tag WhatsApp leads that mention one |
To track AI answers automatically across many questions, our product Upranke monitors whether your brand appears in AI answers.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO worth it for a small business in India?
Yes, if customers research your service online before contacting you. Most of the work, such as clear answers on your key pages, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and fixing crawler access, costs time rather than money and also improves your regular Google rankings. Start with your ten most important pages and your Business Profile, then measure for a quarter before deciding how much more to invest.
Do I need Hindi pages to appear in AI answers in India?
Only if your customers search in Hindi. Google’s AI Mode works in Hindi and seven other Indian languages, so Hindi-speaking users can get AI answers in Hindi, and a good Hindi page gives you a chance to be cited. Check your Search Console queries and customer conversations first. If demand is there, create reviewed Hindi versions of your core pages on separate URLs with hreflang.
Which matters more in India, Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT?
For most Indian businesses, Google matters more because of its reach and its local results, and AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index as regular Search. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot matter more for B2B, technology and research-heavy purchases. The foundations are shared, so a good programme covers both, with Google as the starting point and the others added through crawler access and Bing indexing.
How much does AEO cost in India?
It depends on how many pages need rewriting, how many languages you serve and whether you handle it in-house. A small business can do the basics with free tools: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Business Profile. Larger programmes add content production, translation, digital PR and citation tracking. Be cautious of fixed packages that promise guaranteed AI rankings, because no one can guarantee a citation.
Can I optimise for answers on WhatsApp?
Not in the way you optimise a website. Since January 2026, Meta’s terms have kept third-party general-purpose AI assistants such as ChatGPT off the WhatsApp Business Platform, so WhatsApp isn’t a place where outside answer engines cite your pages. Use it as the channel where interested buyers continue the conversation, and keep your WhatsApp answers consistent with your website.
How long before AEO shows results?
Improvements to pages that are already indexed and trusted can show up in AI answers once they are recrawled, which can take days or weeks. Newer sites, new language versions and authority-building work take longer, often several months. Measure your baseline before you start, re-check monthly, and judge the programme over at least one quarter.
AEO in India rewards the same things buyers value: clear answers, honest detail, the right language and easy follow-up. If you want a team that does this across Google, AI assistants and local search, see our Generative Engine Optimization services.
